
Judy Allen
Leadership and Organizational Training and Development Consultant
Judy Allen retired from Agilent Technologies (previously part of Hewlett Packard) in 2007 to spend more of her time traveling and increasing her involvement in community service activities. Her interest in CRC stems from a belief in providing both children and adults with the tools needed to manage conflict and promote peaceful coexistence. She is eager to build her own mediation skills and hopes to see conflict management training extend more broadly into the community. Judy received her MBA from Eastern Michigan University. She moved from Michigan to California in 1988 with her partner, Susan, and their daughter, Elizabeth.
Catherine Byrne
Mediator and Social Psychologist
Dr Catherine C. Byrne earned her BA in Psychology , her Masters degree in International Peace Studies from Notre Dame University (Joan B. Kroc Institute) and her Ph.D. in Social Psychology. Her post-doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania was in the study of Ethnopolitical Conflict. Cath came to Santa Cruz in 2004 to teach in the Psychology Department at UCSC as a tenure track professor of Social Psychology. After 3 years as a professor, despite loving the campus, students, teaching, and her research that focused on survivors who testified before the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), she decided to leave the University and devote more time to applied work, including mediation. She currently serves on the CRC Board, is involved in community mediation and truly values the work the CRC is committed to.
Karen Calcagno
Owner, Advantage Coaching & Advantage Family Business Center
Karen Calcagno and husband, Joe, have been in business together in Santa Cruz County since 1965. Karen's mission is to help family businesses with succession and peaceful estate settlement. Karen is the founder of Santa Cruz County SCORE, "Business Counselors to America's Small Business" and has spent a lifetime as a community volunteer. Her focus has always been building community by teaching communication skills and providing opportunities to stretch. The CRC is a significant extension of that interest.
Myles F. Corcoran
Owner, Myles F. Corcoran Construction Consulting Inc.
Myles F. Corcoran is a Construction Consultant, General Contractor, Certified Arbitrator and Mediator with Myles F. Corcoran Construction Consulting, Inc. in Santa Cruz. He is originally from New York and moved to California with his wife Pat in 1973. He worked in construction for 11 years before starting his own Construction Consulting firm 19 years ago which specializes in helping people build, designing specialized details and finding ways through difficult disputes about buildings. Myles is drawn to helping people resolve conflict and feels the CRC organization serves an important need in our community. Myles is currently serving as the Treasurer of CRC.
David Giannini
Business Consultant
David Giannini after a successful career in Silicon Valley, David has turned his energy to our local community. He now leverages his experience helping start new ventures in the Monterey Bay Area. David has a strong belief that in helping others, our own lives become much richer. In addition to his consulting business, David has served as Executive Director of the Divorced Fathers Network, helping fathers stay involved with their children; Associate Director of PROFILE of Santa Cruz, guiding unemployed professionals in their search for their next position; and as a mentor for young competitive cyclists. As part of his work with the Divorced Fathers Network, David became interested in conflict resolution. He is now an active volunteer mediator with CRC.
Drew Goodwin
Training Consultant
Drew Goodwin is a freelance consultant specializing in developing human capital. Drew earned a BA from UCSC in Environmental Studies/Economics with an emphasis in sustainability. After 15 years of being involved in all phases of product development for the commercial mushroom industry, he has spent the last five years consulting with various organizations to assist them in becoming more sustainable by developing essential skills such as problem solving, conflict resolution and systems thinking. Currently, Drew serves as the interim Secretary of the Board.
Kathleen Hughes
Development Director, UCSC Student Affairs
Kathleen Rose Hughes has been employed by UC Santa Cruz for nearly 20 years and is an alumna of UCSC with a bachelor’s degree in American Studies. Kathleen has served on local, regional, and national boards of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and on the board of the Santa Cruz Chapter of the ACLU. She believes that the ability to manage and resolve conflict on all levels, from interpersonal to international, is a key component to a healthy and sustainable future for humankind and considers CRC a community treasure.
Joel Wallock
Attorney
Joel Wallock is a “trying to retire” attorney who has practiced for 40 years, most recently in Corporate and Real Estate Law in San Francisco. He received his degree in Law from Boalt Hall at UC Berkeley. Joel has been trained as a mediator and was involved with mediation for many years during the time he practiced in San Francisco. Between 1998-2000 he and his wife lived in Bangalore, India where he lectured at the National Law School on Mediation. Joel and his wife moved from Mill Valley to Aptos in 2000 where Joel became involved with the CRC as a volunteer with the Small Claims and Community Mediation Programs. He is currently serving as the Board’s President.
