Conflict happens all around us, between individuals and groups - family, neighbors, community organizations, businesses, etc - many times each day. While we cannon prevent conflict, we can improve how we handle it.
The CRC's trainings are designed to help individuals and groups gain a better understanding of conflict, why it happens, and how we can address conflict in a more effective, constructive way and with more positive outcomes. The CRC's trainings are interactive, engaging, and fun, and can be effectively delivered in-person and online.

The CRC's trainings are designed to help individuals and groups gain a better understanding of conflict, why it happens, and how we can address conflict in a more effective, constructive way and with more positive outcomes. The CRC's trainings are interactive, engaging, and fun, and can be effectively delivered in-person and online.
The CRC offers:
- De-Escalation Training - 2 hours. This training is held publicly once every 2-3 months and is available privately for organizations or groups.
- Conflict Management Skills Training - 6 hours, conducted over one or two days. This training is held once every 2-3 months and is available privately for organizations or groups.
- Community Mediation Training - 40 hours. Total time includes 6 hours of Conflict Management Skills Training which is a prerequisite. This training is usually held in winter-spring and conducted online (10 x 3 hr sessions) or in person over two weekends.
- Specialized mediation training for individuals who have taken our Community Mediation Training. Areas include Restorative Justice, Small Claims Court, Divorce, Family mediation.
- Custom training programs for organizations, businesses, and community groups that range from 2 to 30 hours. Please contact [email protected] if you'd like to discuss custom training options for your group.

De-escalation Training (2.5 hrs)
We experience anger and frustration at home, in the workplace, in public spaces, in service industry settings like restaurants, etc., in ways that sometimes feel out of proportion to the circumstances. We can also be on the receiving end of others’ anger and frustration in these settings.
Why does this happen? How does it affect us? How can we respond? De-escalation skills are key in helping people (including ourselves) reduce anger and increase the calmness and clarity that allow us to deal with immediate problems and issues more effectively.
This course will help you:

This course will help you:
- Investigate the way that stress increases our potential for anger and reactivity
- Understand the physiology of anger
- Learn and practice techniques for de-escalating anger and conflict with role plays and real life examples
- A minimum of eight participants are required for the training to proceed. If date is changed, registration fee can be refunded or move to the next training.

Conflict Management Skills Training (6 hrs)
Key training for anyone interested in gaining insight and practice in understanding and reducing conflict. Participants will gain a greater understanding of how conflict works, why it happens, and practical skills and steps we can use to address conflict using an informative, interactive, and fun process. The aim is to improve our capacity to listen without defensiveness, speak without offending, find common ground, and reach mutually satisfying solutions.
This course will help you:
- Understand how and why we react to conflict
- Investigate your own conflict style
- Learn how to manage your own emotional reactions
- Listen without defensiveness
- Express yourself clearly and confidently
- Find common ground and satisfying solutions
- This training is a pre-requisite as part of the 40-Hour Community Mediation Training (next dates TBD)

Community Mediation Training (40 hrs)
This 40-hour training is for those interested in becoming a community mediator and introduces the structures, process, formats, and necessary capacities and communication skills of facilitative mediation. We emphasize an interactive and engaging experience and extensive practice and coaching by trainers and experienced mediators. Participants will receive a printed student manual prior to the start of training and a certificate upon completion.
Training graduates are encouraged to apply to join our roster of volunteer mediators who work on community mediations. Mediators also have the opportunity to become involved in restorative justice, Small Claims Court, youth, housing, and other kinds of specialized mediation that the CRC offers. Participants find that skills learned also greatly benefit their interactions at work, at home, and in the community.
Along with the prerequisite 6-hour Conflict Management Skills Training, the 34 hours of community meditation adds up to 40 hours of total training fulfilling the requirements of the Dispute Resolution Programs Act (DRPA) to become qualified as a community mediator.
We are a NAFCM Certified Center to offer Community Mediation training. Please contact us if you'd like private Community Mediation training for your group of 15 or more participants.

BILINGUAL and BICULTURAL VOLUNTEER MEDIATORS NEEDED!
We are actively recruiting Spanish speaking volunteer mediators to join our team! We offer training scholarships for our Community Mediation Training and the prerequisite Conflict Management Skills Training in exchange for a year of volunteering as a mediator with our youth programs specifically. If interested please fill out an application form.
